When we start our art journey, trying to find our place among those who came before us and have found their audience, popularity, and success, we are like sponges looking for the “secret.” In the beginning, there’s a lot of experimenting, listening, studying, and hard work; at some undetermined point, it begins to work. Now, there’s a choice; keep in mind there is no wrong answer here. A: Stay the course and get better at what you’re doing, or do you B: venture into uncharted territory and try something new? Then there is C: build on your skills and bring new things into it through experimentation. I’m a fan of C, consistently making time to play through shapes, media, color, composition, etc., knowing something will be discovered. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes not so much. Both are valuable.
With that, here’s my latest rabbit hole: a stab at a digital portrait based on some b/w scrap I had lying about and a free afternoon recently. I’m curious to see how it would work with a specific individual and a concept.
